At Merrill Gardens on 35th Avenue, assisted living services are available on an as-needed basis. Most residents here don't need substantial assistance and the feeling of this community is that of a luxury hotel. However, one of the biggest positive differences between Merrill Gardens at 35th Avenue and other retirement communities in this area, is residents don't need to move when their situation changes and this makes living at Merrill Gardens even more comforting.
Our assisted-living services focus on nurturing residents to help them reach their maximum potential. Our staff fosters independence, not dependence, and is sensitive to the individuality, privacy and freedom of choice our residents are entitled to. Care is what we do, not simply something we provide.
Personal care services
At 35th Avenue, we develop individually tailored service plans that support each resident's own ability to perform activities of daily living. We might assist with any of the following activities:
- Bathing
- Dressing
- Grooming
- Medication management
- Escorting
- Safety checks
- Dining
- Special services
Responding to change
We meet the changing needs of our residents by offering a fee structure that addresses the degree of need and frequency of interaction. A resident's monthly fee may increase or decrease as his or her needs change. Our trained staff documents the services we provide and notes trends that might indicate a higher level of need.
Teamwork
No person is an island, and each resident brings relationships with family, physicians, therapists and friends. At Merrill Gardens, we keep the lines of communication open and work as a team with a resident's existing support system to ensure his or her health and well-being and address any challenges we may encounter.
The excitement begins the minute you choose Merrill Gardens at West Seattle as your new home. You'll move into a beautiful apartment that's fresh, newly appointed and ready for you to decorate any way you like. And your apartment will feature all the privacy and freedom you're accustomed to--but with a spacious library, gourmet dining and a rooftop terrace, too, so you can entertain your guests in style. Even your much-loved small pet can move with you to enjoy the West Seattle lifestyle and all that Merrill Gardens offers!
Are you a private person or a social one? You're free to live as you choose at Merrill Gardens. Relax in the library with a good book, invite new and old friends to the movies, join a bridge club or take part in the abundance of outdoor activities, like beach walks along Alki Point. You can even take advantage of the nearby YMCA and Senior Center and all the activities they offer.

The testimonials shown below are from current 35th Avenue residents and staff members.
"The best part of living here is the people and the activities. For example the oil painting - I've always wanted to learn to oil paint, and now I finally have the chance to do it! I also love the tai chi - I'm so glad you have it here. It's a great exercise and really keeps you going! In addition, the building is so beautiful. The newness and openness of it is really nice." ~ Marie P., Resident, 35th Avenue Community
"Since my husband passed away, I've found all the friends that I need and all the activities I want. I have so much fun living here. I learned how to bowl on the Wii game, and just yesterday I won the bowling tournament! I love having friends I can do things with." ~ Jean B., Resident, 35th Avenue Community
"I like the people that I've met and I love my apartment and the view. The staff is so very nice, and I like everyone on the staff. They are so helpful and wonderful! I haven't found one person that isn't friendly, nice and helpful." ~ Jeanne O., Resident, 35th Avenue Community
"I like the variety of food they serve - it's quite delicious." ~ Audrey W., Resident, 35th Avenue Community
"I like the activities and the people here - they're really friendly. I like the help. It's a really nice place to live!" ~ Joyce H., Resident, 35th Avenue Community
"Active minds and active bodies are healthier and happier. As an activity coordinator I find this to be a really joyful job because I’m getting people involved, active and laughing! I love to make residents laugh. And people really appreciate the help – and I know that because they tell me. I try to treat everyone like my mom and dad. I really enjoy the residents and providing them with an active healthy life. And on top of that, you can really learn a lot from them!" ~ Kate W., Active Living Assistant, 35th Avenue Community
